Dean White

Dean White, P.Eng, Founder and CEO of Roots 2 STEM, didn’t know he was meant to be an engineer until he was in university. He was originally enrolled in sciences, but when a friend asked for help with an engineering project, Dean was inspired. He discovered his life’s passion. Engineering was fun, challenging and it constantly pushed his boundaries. Dean graduated with an engineering degree from the University of Calgary and has been a member of the Association of Professional Engineers of Alberta (APEGA) since 1982. His career has taken him literally around the world, from the North Sea to Nigeria, from Alberta’s Oil Patch to the Arctic. He has worked in oil & gas, fixed satellite communications on Coast Guard vessels and worked for the U.S. military. In addition, Dean is an inventor. He holds a patent for an alternative energy source that combines wind and solar power. After a successful career as a professional engineer, Dean decided to create a learning space where students could learn about engineering, long before they leave high school, in a hands-on environment. With his colleagues, he builds programs for grades one through twelve, homeschool students and college interns, based on STEAM (science, technology, engineering, math, plus the arts) curricula.

Robin Rootes

Robin has a passion for helping to make the world a better place; she holds a degree in Psychology from UBC, with a focus on developmental psychology, as she knew from an early age that she wanted to help people. She was also at the top of her class in the Dale Carnegie Leadership Training Course. Robin has a longstanding record of helping out in the not for profit field, volunteering at major events with many organizations, while also focusing her efforts with Animal Rescue Foundation at a more intense level for over 5 years. In 2013 Robin decided to look for a new career path in which she could be a benefit to society; she worked at the Calgary Drop In and Rehab Centre Society in Volunteer Services for 2 ½ years, working closely with corporate and family groups, hosting tours, and running the school program which brought students in grades 6-12 into the shelter to learn about homelessness. In March 2016, Robin became a Corporate and Community Engagement Specialist for OneWalk to Conquer Cancer benefiting the Alberta Cancer Foundation. Participants of OneWalk pledge to raise $1500 each for ACF; Robin taught people how to fundraise and helped them reach their goals. Robin joined the Roots 2 STEM team in March 2017 as Manager of Fund Development – a title she was born to hold according to many people who have worked with her. Robin brings new vigour to the office, planning a variety of events and helping to create awareness about the programs being offered at Roots 2 STEM.
